About this Blog

Seek the LORD your God and you will find him, if you search after him with all your heart and with all your soul.

What can God offer me?

So you’re looking for God.  You think you know where to find Him – and you’re doing what you can to look for Him.  You try to pray, you try to read a bit from the Bible, and you’re trying to meet some friends who believe in God too.

But what do you want to get from your relationship with God?  Why did you decide to look for Him in the first place?  We all know that relationships have to go two ways – its not just about what we can get from God, its about what we can do for Him as well – but quite often the motivating factor for us human beings is what benefits we personally will gain from our actions.

Yes, it may sound selfish that we are looking for God because we want to know what he can give us, but this is not a material desire along the lines of looking for a new car.  We have an inbuilt need for meaning, for hope, and for reassurance that there’s more to life than this.  That’s why people start looking for God – to find out the truth.

Once again, let’s have a look at the Bible.  After all, the Bible is God’s thoughts written down, so somewhere in there it’s bound to say what He can offer us:

I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. (John 10:10)

This is something that Jesus says, and we know that Jesus’ purpose was to do his Father’s work.  The work of God involved sending his son to die for us, in order that we can have a chance of eternal life.  Not only that, but the verse above implies to me that we will receive blessings in this life if we follow God and do what He asks.

Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. (Luke 12:32)

Jesus tells us that God is going to give us His kingdom!  From other places in the Bible we learn that this kingdom is going to be set up on earth, following the second coming of Jesus and the resurrection, and that the world will be transformed into a beautiful place, where we can live and reign with Jesus for eternity.

So what can God give us?  Blessings in this life, and eternal life in His kingdom – that makes it worthwhile putting the effort into looking for God with our whole heart, soul, mind and strength.

One Year on FaceBook

One year ago today I started a FaceBook page for BibleQuizzes.org.uk, not sure whether it would be successful or not. A year on and I can confidently say it has been more successful that I had expected, with over 2,850 fans and plenty of interaction. The numbers did slow significantly immediately after when FaceBook in their wisdom decided to ditch the “fans” and replace it with “like”. I’m convinced that was a bad move by them.

I don’t use FaceBook much for personal stuff, games etc as it seems like such a waste of time and friends seem to post pointless nonsense most of the time, but I have to admit the potential for keeping in touch with fans, sorry, likers is amazing! Anyway, we’re slowly creeping towards 3,000 fans (yes, likers, I know and I don’t care… to me it will always be fans!).

So, it seems appropriate that we should launch our Finding God FaceBook page today. Please join and share your thoughts and experiences, help others to find God too.

How do I find God?

Now that we have our new brand name – Finding God – it’s up to us to give you some idea of how to go about finding God for yourself.  Easier said than done isn’t it? If you’re someone new to the Bible you may not know where to start looking.  If you’re an old hand at Bible study you may feel full of knowledge, but are you confident that you really know God?  Maybe you just want to know more about God – you’ve heard about Him, but He doesn’t seem to be there in your life.

So where’s the best place to start?  I’m going to suggest that God has told us how we can find him, and we need to let him speak to us through the pages of His word, the Bible.

Come near to God and he will come near to you – James 4:8

So there it is.  To find God we have to come near to him.  As that church slogan says:- “Feeling far from God?  Guess who’s moved!”  But how can we get near to God?  He’s an omnipotent being, without a physical presence on earth, with mental abilities so far above us that we are no more than ants in His sight, and yet we are told in the Bible to come near to Him!

Here are my suggestions on how we can come near to God:

  1. Prayer
  2. Reading the Bible
  3. Spending time with other people who want to come near to God

Let’s elaborate on those ideas:

1. Prayer

How can you come close to someone without talking to them?  God wants us to talk to Him, to ask Him for help, to thank Him for our blessings, and to recognize how small we are in His presence.  Of course He knows what we will say before we say it, but without prayer we can’t build up that relationship with God.

Still don’t know where to start with prayer? Why not try the Lord’s Prayer – that’s what Jesus gave the disciples when they didn’t know where to start with prayer!

2.   Reading the Bible

The Bible is not just any old book that talks about God.  It’s actually the mind of God, inspired directly by Him, so that we can learn more about Him and His purpose.  If we read it, we may get a little closer to understanding what God wants from us and what he has promised for us.

Still don’t know where to start with reading the Bible? Why not order these free bookmarks from BibleQuizzes.org.uk and commit to reading a little every day!

3. Spending time with other people who want to come near to God

This point speaks for itself – the more you interact with others who have similar viewpoints to yourself, whether that be moral values or a similar hope for the future, the closer you will come to God.  Knowing that God has had a positive impact on someone else’s life will encourage you to find out more for yourself.

Don’t know where to find other people to talk to?  Do your friends or family believe in God?  How about finding an internet community to join?  Even better, leave your comments here, and together we can work towards Finding God.

Things are changing

Exciting new changes are afoot! We’re in the process of networking all our sites around our new theme of Finding God, reflecting our purpose in helping bring people closer to God. An update of The Bible Study is in the pipeline and we’ll soon be launching our new Finding God facebook group.

We also hope to have a few guest contributors on board to give you a wide variety of inspirational material. This is all going to take a while to roll out, but it will create a better linked network of sites that will work together in harmony with each other. Keep seeking out God with all your heart and soul!

We're back!

It’s been a while since we’ve posted on here. There are many reasons for this, partly because we’ve been so busy with maintaining the sites but also because of frustrations with a large amount of spam on the blog. Hopefully now we’ve added extra spam protection which will help make your user experience a lot better.

Our plan is to give you more news and gossip about the site, posting more often and sharing some of our experiences with you. Also we are going to integrate this blog more fully into the main sites and give it a wider scope and a new name. Over the next few weeks you will see a number of changes on this blog and all the other sites reflecting the new direction were taking.

For now though we’ve added a new Bible study for you to digest – Hannah and Mary
